Hyster Europe wins award for innovative waste application solution

3rd January 2019

At the Sustainable Ireland Awards on 21st November in Belfast, Hyster Europe beat stiff competition to win the Waste Equipment Innovation award for its innovative ‘Cool Truck’ package for Hyster® lift trucks. The award is intended to recognise equipment manufacturers operating in the UK and Ireland which have created innovative solutions to make waste and recycling operations more effective and efficient.Hyster Europe received the award for the Cool Truck package, which is available for Hyster® forklifts with up to 5.5-tonne capacity and is specifically designed to prevent the common problem of engines overheating due to dust, dirt and debris.  As a result, it helps extend run time, enhancing dependability in extreme operating environments such as paper bale handling and recycling.  Handling challenges in the recycling industry

When operating standard forklift trucks in the recycling industry, the radiators can easily get clogged up causing unnecessary downtime. This is not only frustrating, but it also costs businesses money in lost production, and can lead to other problems with the truck.

Bales of materials in recycling operations also can have non-standard dimensions and weights. If left outside, the bales can absorb rain water resulting in additional weight.

Chiselling loads out from tightly packed bales on a vehicle can also cause massive shock loadings to the attachment, mast rollers and carriage. This risks serious damage to the transmission and front-end equipment (such as attachments), whilst potentially also overloading the forklift’s engine and cooling system.

Hyster® Cool Truck overcomes common challenges

The Cool Truck package is specially engineered for recycling centres or waste processing plants, where there may be large amounts of debris and dirt in the environment or bales of dusty materials to be transported.

The Cool Truck package is designed to reduce the amount of debris entering the engine compartment and getting stuck on the transmission or in the radiator, using an innovative automatically reversing fan that significantly extends radiator cleaning intervals.  This keeps the truck running longer, minimises radiator cleanouts and helps the truck to stay cool even in high ambient operating temperatures.

Venting on side panels help to minimise the vacuuming effect of debris on the ground and a solid multi-piece belly pan under the engine compartment reduces the amount of loose debris entering the underside of the truck.

Tilt and steer cylinder gaiters are used to minimise the risk of damage to cylinders from debris and tough rubber guards over the drive axle also minimise ingress of dust and debris under the floorplates.

When chiselling loads out, the Hyster® Duramatch™ transmission, with its Controlled Power Reversal, reduces shocks through the transmission, while the hydraulic load accumulator can act as a dampener to the lift truck’s mast, cushioning the load and the attachment, helping to reduce shocks.

Tried and tested performance

To challenge the dependability of the system, Hyster Europe has conducted extended field trials in some of the harshest handling applications worldwide. The company discovered that conventional trucks required engine compartment cleanouts much more frequently to prevent overheating.

Therefore, this truck is specifically designed to keep going in tough recycling applications and this increases the reliability and dependability that both businesses and users need from their equipment.
